How often should I brush and floss my teeth?
For brushing your teeth, it is important to remember the following:
- Brush at least twice a day
- Always brush right before bedtime
- Use a soft toothbrush approved by the American Dental Association
- Electronic toothbrushes are also helpful. They can save time and get in between the teeth better.
Important flossing tips:
- Floss once a day only, overflossing can cause damage to the gums.
- Use your thumb and forefinger to guide the floss and curve it into a C shape to get around each tooth fully.
How often should I get a dental exam and cleaning?
It is highly recommended that every patient get a full dental exam and cleaning at least twice a year. Dental exams are key to finding dental issues and allowing your dentist to treat them before they become a larger issue. Through x-rays and consistent dental visits, we can see patterns emerge that will help us take care of our patients better. For some patients, though, a visit to the dentist more than twice a year can be advantageous. Those with gum disease, a history of cavities, or a large amount of dental work can benefit from more frequent visits.
Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?
A blend of metals has been used for over 100 years to fill cavities. While the metal mix does contain small amounts of mercury, the general consensus is that amalgam fillings are safe. When combined with the other metals, the mercury becomes inactive and safe. However, many other options are available, including the very popular tooth colored composites.
